Chat Room Age Consideration
Parents have continued to wonder about what their children are doing on the internet. With kids being relatively well trained on computers and most parents barely knowing how to log onto the internet, it can make things very difficult when it comes to security. The question remains for those parents and their kids – how early is too early for online chatting? Is it alright for kids to use online chat rooms in order to pick up dates? Though on the surface, this might seem harmless, there are a number of different considerations worth taking into account in this regard.
This issue has been debated by many national pundits over the last few years as people attempt to find out more about online dating and online chat rooms. In general, it seems like the prevailing opinion on this issue is very fluid and always moving. Depending upon who you talk with, you could get a number of different answers. From a safety standpoint, parents should err on the side of caution when presented with this question.
When young people go into chat rooms to meet new people, they are not only meeting other boys and girls their age, but they are also exposed to older people. Though it certainly isn’t prevalent, there are a number of people out there who would like to take advantage of such a situation. Because of that, it is advised to keep kids under the age of 16 out of chat rooms. Those kids might not have the ability to use good judgment in regards to not giving out information and things like that.
Online chat rooms can be a good place for young people to meet each other, though. Just about every kid in America has some sort of access to the internet, so they can connect with each other. The idealist theory says that kids can make good decisions about who they meet and who they talk to online. People who subscribe to reality understand this isn’t always the case, though. When used responsibly, a chat room is a place where like minded kids can come together. Just like with their older counterparts, these teenagers are only looking to connect with another good person. In moderation, this can be a very healthy exercise for teens.
The verdict on the matter is somewhat convoluted, so it is up to parents to make their own decision. Depending upon your child and his or her level of maturity, you might or might not allow them to partake in chat rooms. Understanding the risks associated with chat rooms is an essential responsibility to parents in this day and age. With some of the dangers out there that children can walk into, parents can no longer stand around blindly while their kids play around on the computer. If you have an especially mature child, then perhaps you can allow him or her to meet a person on the internet. It is better to be safe than sorry, though.
